BAMINI-Tamil10 · main Bamini font
Plain regular style — the build most Tamil print shops and documents standardised on. Right choice for letters, forms and everyday documents.
Installing Bamini
Windows
- Download the .ttf file and keep it in a folder you will not delete.
- Right-click the file and choose Install for all users — otherwise the font is only available to your own account, which breaks shared PageMaker projects.
- Restart the application you were using; Word and PageMaker only read the font list at start-up.
- Check that Bamini Tamil (the styles install as BAMINI-Tamil01, BAMINI-Tamil10 and so on) appears in the font dropdown.
macOS
- Double-click the .ttf file to open Font Book.
- Choose Install Font and confirm there are no validation warnings.
- Quit and reopen the application so the font list refreshes.
- In apps that separate font families, look for Bamini Tamil (BAMINI-Tamil10 and similar) rather than a Tamil-named family.
Android
- Android does not allow installing arbitrary fonts system-wide on most devices.
- Use an app that bundles its own fonts, or convert the text to Unicode and read it with the system Tamil font.
- For documents, open them in a desktop application where the font can be installed.

Setting Bamini in Word, PageMaker and CorelDRAW
- Word. Select the text, choose Bamini in the font box. If the document came from elsewhere, use Replace Fonts to swap the old font name for Bamini in one pass.
- PageMaker. Bamini must be installed for all users before PageMaker starts, otherwise the story may reflow with a substitute font. Set it in Type → Character.
- CorelDRAW. Apply Bamini as a character-level font, not as a paragraph style, so the Latin characters stay readable for later editing.
Installing a font never repairs text typed in a different encoding. If the document was created in Unicode and needs to become Bamini, convert the text with the Unicode to Bamini converter and apply the font to the result.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Text still reads jkpo; | Bamini is installed but not applied to the text | Select the text and set the font to Bamini |
| Empty boxes or question marks | The text is Unicode and the application has no Tamil font | Apply Noto Sans Tamil, Latha or Nirmala UI — do not convert |
| Some letters look wrong | Font version differs from the one the document was typed with | Install another variant from the style table above, or convert the text and re-apply |
| Font missing from the list | Installed only for one user, or the app was already running | Install for all users and restart the application |
Why Are There So Many Bamini Variants?
Bamini was never sold through one official channel. DTP studios and type houses standardised on different builds, each shipped as its own .ttf, and documents typed with one build can render a few rare clusters differently in another. Practical consequences:
- install the variant your document was typed with — Bamini Tamil 10 covers most cases;
- if a few letters look wrong, try a neighbouring variant from the style table above;
- or remove the version problem entirely: convert the text to Unicode with the Bamini to Unicode converter.
The pack also mirrors what third-party archives such as fontsgeek and cufonfonts distribute; we are not affiliated with either.
Free Unicode Tamil Fonts You Can Use Instead
If your goal is to read or publish Tamil — not to feed an old template — a Unicode font is the better choice: it displays Tamil without any encoding tricks, and the text survives copying, search engines and mobile devices.
- Noto Sans Tamil — open licensed (SIL OFL), designed for screen use, available from Google Fonts. This site uses it for Tamil samples.
- Latha and Nirmala UI — already installed with Windows; no download needed.
- Other SIL OFL Tamil families — safe for print and web use, including embedding, as long as the licence file travels with the font.
Unicode fonts display Tamil text directly, so they cannot produce the
jkpo; effect in the first place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bamini font really free to download here?
Yes — every variant on this page downloads directly from this site, no signup and no waiting page. One honest caveat: Bamini has circulated in Tamil print shops since the 1990s and no public redistribution licence exists, so the files are offered for personal and educational use. If you hold the rights and want a variant removed, email us and it goes.
Which Bamini variant should I install?
The one your document was typed with. Bamini Tamil 10 is the most widely used build and the right first try; font archives bundle dozens of variants because DTP studios standardised on different ones. The preview images in the style table below are rendered from the actual font files, so you can often recognise the variant your document uses before downloading. If a few rare letters still look wrong after installing, try a neighbouring variant — or convert the text to Unicode, which has no version problem at all.
Do I need the font to use the converters?
No. The converters work on characters, not glyphs — nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded. The font only matters when you want to display or print text that was typed with Bamini keys.
The font is installed but the text still shows jkpo;
The font is installed but not applied. Select the text, then choose Bamini in the font list of the application. Installing a font never changes text that was typed with a different encoding — for that, convert the text first with the Bamini to Unicode or Unicode to Bamini tool.
Why do I see empty boxes instead of Tamil?
Empty boxes mean the text is already Unicode but the application has no Tamil font to draw it with. Install a Unicode Tamil font such as Noto Sans Tamil or use the Latha / Nirmala UI fonts that ship with Windows, then apply that font to the text.
Can I use Bamini in commercial print work?
That depends on the licence that came with your copy, which we cannot grant or verify. For commercial print runs, confirm the terms with the font’s author or switch to an open-licensed Unicode Tamil font.
